Clean, Shaven with “schizophrenic” appetizers

Clean, Shaven is a movie about a schizophrenic man who tries to track down his estranged daughter after being released from a mental institution. So we thought it was only fitting that we should make something with flavors you wouldn’t normally put together. (Shout out to FoodPairings.com for great flavor combos!)

Chocolate mousse with fried onions on crackers

Not gonna lie, we didn’t really get this one right. I accidentally bought low-sugar mousse and the melba toast wasn’t the right texture for what we were trying to go for. Ritz crackers may have been better, and a richer chocolatey-er pudding would definitely have helped. Bottom line, we could definitely see the flavors working well together if we had used better ingredients.

Prosciutto-wrapped avocado with rosemary

This, on the other hand, was fantastic. I always knew prosciutto went well with sweet fruit like melon or pear, but avocado? With a little pinch of rosemary on top? Creamyherbysaltygoodness. We will definitely be making this again.

Sliced strawberry topped with parmesan shavings

A wonderful tangysweet-mutedsalty pairing. For this recipe it’s important to make sure you get ripe, sweet strawberries and freshly shave the parmesan to get the most out of both flavors. Maybe even cut small chunks of the parmesan and put it on a toothpick with the strawberry? Stuff the whole strawberry with cheese? Get a lil crazy with it, depending on what kind of cheese-to-strawberry ratio you’re looking for.

Clean, Shaven:

Jackie’s first remark was “Isn’t that the bad guy from The Mask??” but Peter Greene is way more fragile in this film.

I’ve taken quite a few psychology courses during my undergrad and abnormal psychology has always been one of my favorites. Clean, Shaven provides a great case study on a man who has schizophrenia. Peter Winter provides a piercing look into the psyche of a mentally ill person, one complete with auditory delusions and the slight fear the supporting characters have towards him.

The sound design in particular is fantastic, with radio frequencies haunting Winter’s every step. Delusions with implanted transmitters and receivers are frequently common with people diagnosed with schizophrenia and Kerrigan depicts these scenes in such a way that is both mesmerizing yet unnerving.

Overall Clean, Shaven was a very satisfying film. I think we made a good choice by making the crackers with such polarizing tastes.
